Bird Flu Outbreak: H5N1 Spreads in Wild Birds, Poultry, and Dairy Cows
Wild Bird Activity
H5N1 bird flu has become widespread among wild birds worldwide, leading to outbreaks and illness in poultry and even US dairy cows. One recent human case has been reported in the United States, raising concerns about the potential for further spread.
Transmission to Mammals
H5N1 viruses can infect mammals that come into contact with areas with high concentrations of the virus, such as environments with infected or dead birds or poultry. Dairy cows in the US have been infected through contaminated water.
Strain and Impact
The bird-adapted strain of H5N1, known as HPAI A H5N1, is highly infectious and has been responsible for numerous outbreaks in the US. This strain is a subtype of the influenza A virus (AH5N1) and can cause respiratory infections in humans.
