Strongest Solar Storm in Nearly 6 Years Slams into Earth, Catching Forecasters by Surprise
On April 21, 2023, a coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the sun, spewing out a burst of plasma that raced toward Earth at nearly two million miles per hour. At its peak, the geomagnetic storm reached severe G4 status according to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).
This was the strongest geomagnetic storm since October 2017, and it caught forecasters by surprise. The SWPC had only issued a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm watch for April 21, but the storm quickly escalated to G4 levels.
The storm caused a variety of problems around the world, including power outages, communication disruptions, and damage to satellites. It also sparked stunning auroras around the world, which were visible as far south as Mexico and Florida.
