Astros Bolster Catching Corps with Caratini

Free Agent Switch-Hitter Inks Two-Year Pact

Houston Signs Former Brewer and Padre

The Houston Astros have addressed their backup catching needs by securing a two-year deal with veteran switch-hitter Victor Caratini. The deal, worth $12 million, was announced by the club on Thursday.

Caratini, 31, brings a wealth of experience to the Astros. He has played 539 career games in the majors for the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres, compiling a .247 batting average with 42 home runs and 172 RBIs.

The switch-hitter is known for his strong defense and ability to handle pitchers. He has a career fielding percentage of .994 and has thrown out 27% of attempted base stealers.

Caratini will serve as the backup to incumbent Astros catcher Martin Maldonado. The two catchers provide a solid tandem behind the plate, with Caratini's ability to hit left-handed adding versatility to the Astros' lineup.

The Astros are coming off a disappointing 106-loss season in 2023. They believe the addition of Caratini will strengthen their roster and help them compete for a World Series title in 2024.
